Day Surgery Trends

About half of all surgery is now performed as day surgery. Day surgery procedures (such as cataract surgery) are generally less complicated, and allow patients to return home rather than staying in the hospital following the surgery.

It is likely that we will continue to see the rate of day surgery procedures increase. This change is largely due to improved medical technology that allows physicians to perform less complicated surgical procedures (such as carpal tunnel release or breast biopsies) outside of operating rooms. This change will help to free up additional time and space in the operating rooms so that there are more resources for complicated and/or urgent surgical procedures.
